I’ll be planting some big pots for the front terrace at David Hasty’s gallery on Saturday, and fiddling with the terrariums he has scattered around the gallery. I feel privileged to have my little friends in such a gorgeous space. I have an especially elegant terry with a chocolate soldier espicia blooming right now, it’s something to see, as well as moss bowls and more looking for good homes. Espicias are especially suited to terrariums; they are related to African violets, but have incredible patterned leaves and grow by sending out aerial plantlets like a spider plant – you can see one of the plantlets in the top of this photo with its roots dangling in search of soil to settle into. Green Mansions are unique, sustainable terrariums created by Nancy Morrow. More than a rainforest in a jar, they are sentient friends, silent wondrous worlds of green life. Lift the top and smell Eden. Terries are low maintenance and particularly suited to urban environments and small spaces. I plant my terries with loving care, then spend weeks or months training the plants and shaping the landscape; they live for years with minimal maintenance.
Green Mansions are popular gifts for housewarmings, and brighten up any office desktop or reception area. Many people keep them on kitchen breakfast countertops, or under skylights in the master bath. Kids who like the outdoors are fascinated by the ever changing worlds under glass. Get your own tiny rainforest at Diane’s Art, Gift, and Home, on Overton Park Street; at the Annesdale Park Gallery or The Spa Midtown, both on Peabody Avenue, all in Midtown Memphis.
Prices range from $25 for wine glass moss creations to an average of $80 for a medium tabletop bowl; prices vary by size, the rarity of the plants, etc.
Terrariums, plants and supplies are available by appointment at the Mansion, along with the opportunity to build your own and learn about the world of gardening under glass. BUILD YOUR OWN TERRARIUM –
Always wanted to make your own terrarium, but not sure how to do it? Or maybe you’ve tried it already but it just didn’t work? Come learn the art and science behind making a balanced miniature ecosystem, and build your own terry with “The Plant Lady,” Nancy Morrow. You will leave with a little friend who will be happy and healthy for a long time in your home or office. Class fee of $45 in advance ($50 day of event) includes activated carbon/sphagnum/rocks/soil mix (enough to plant up to a one gallon container) and a credit of $10 towards your choice of glassware and plants, plus all the information you need to build and maintain a healthy, long-lasting miniature rainforest. Glass containers of various sizes ($5-$40) and tiny plants including selaginella, hemigraphis, bromeliads, pilea, fittonia, ferns and live moss ($5-$10) will be available for purchase. Bring your own figurines, crystals, or other décor. You are also welcome to bring your own clear glass container, just make sure it is sturdy, with an opening you can easily get your hand through to plant and maintain your miniature garden.
