Carnivorous Sundew plants and tillandsia bulbs, fossils and mosses all add up to a landscape from another planet!

Here’s my first attempt at an artist’s bio:

Plants are sentient, mysterious creatures from another kingdom, who will communicate with us if we can be still and pay attention. Building these Green Mansions is a long process, akin to writing poetry, I think. The colors and textures, as well as growth habits and tendencies of the plants are the palette with which I can construct the bones of a design to grow and change for years to come. I propagate many of the plants I use which gives me the time to get to know them individually, and imagine the container and companions that would be best with them.

The terrariums on exhibit range in age from 2 months to 4 years. They are similar to bonsai, with the plants kept in check with careful trimming. Some of the plants are miniature or very slow growing, needing no trimming. Others can be aggressive, resulting in a design that will be much more fluid over the years as the plants compete for resources and are shaped by my hand. You can see more about this on my website, or give me a call.

I open my studio to teach people about the art and science of building and maintaining terrariums, kokedama, and bonsai. In addition, I consult with people who want to learn about house plants and gardening in their own homes or offices, usually in half day sessions, and enjoy sharing my love for our green companions with people who have never considered or understood how to appreciate their beauty and life force. My students learn basic considerations for selecting plants for a particular space, and technical skills on handling, transplanting, watering, etc. which, once learned, open up the world of plants for most people to explore and enjoy.

Come See Me at Dabney’s Fall Festival Saturday Oct. 21!!

The fine folks at Dabney’s Nursery invited me to bring some terrariums for sale this Saturday and I said, HECK YEAH!!!  There’ll be mule drawn carriage tours of the nursery, BBQ, a petting zoo, and live music by Delta Joe Sanders.  Who could ask for more on a beautiful October afternoon?

So, in between all of that fun stuff, step inside the gift shop to see my new creations.  I have a variety of smaller terrariums, some that can hang in a kitchen window, and will bring a few larger guys, too.  Also, a good variety of healthy, happy tillandsias (air plants), a few terrarium kits, and a “build your own” for kids while supplies last!

Dabney’s is located at 5576 Hacks Cross Road; I’ll be there from 11 am to 4 pm, so come on down and visit a while.  Got a question?  Give me a holla at 901-828-3685.

This beauty is now 6 months old and needs a good trimming – come see it. You might have a table just waiting for it at home!

Tiny green jewels
You can put them away from a window so long as you have a broad spectrum light. Plants need light to make food, remember?

Sara Beth’s New Green Mansion

Sara Beth bought a Wardian case while visiting in St. Louis, and brought it by to see if I could plant it for her.

I’ve looked at these miniature ornamental iron and glass contraptions many times, but never planted one as they are for some reason designed more for showing with artificial plants (ack!) than actually for planting.  The glass panes were not sealed, and the metal tray in the bottom rattled around unsecured, with a gap between the sides of the tray and frame.  I got my good friend Donn to seal it all very neatly with aquarium safe silicone sealer, then headed East to plant the little guy.

Sara Beth has a perfect little nook for the terrarium, with a large south facing window and plantation shutters to filter the brighter beams

So I gathered my rocks, gravel, activated carbon, sphagnum moss and, of course,

My special terrarium soil mix.  I like to mix soil in this enamel washpan my friend, Alisa, gave me years ago.

I propagate most of my plants in little mini greenhouses like this box of espicia, peacock fern, and ficus pumila.

I like using selaginella in terries, and this variety grows tall enough to fill the tall case.   Two little fittonia huddle in the corner.

It wil take a few months for everyone to settle and start really filling the space,  but I think it turned out pretty nice.

Two kinds of hemographis reptans, peacock fern, selaginella cypress moss, espicia, ficus pumila, feather moss

I think they will be very happy together for many years to come.

One main reason I am in this business is to share the joy of living with plants.  Please send me a note if you want to learn more, or to set up a consultation to get your own Green Mansion.

Peace and love – Nancy

What Happens at a Build Your Own Workshop?

Pick your glass; pick your plants, play in the dirt, and leave with a new little friend to show everyone. Open the top, smell the rainforest, and be transported.
