Carnivorous Sundew plants and tillandsia bulbs, fossils and mosses all add up to a landscape from another planet!

Here’s my first attempt at an artist’s bio:

Plants are sentient, mysterious creatures from another kingdom, who will communicate with us if we can be still and pay attention. Building these Green Mansions is a long process, akin to writing poetry, I think. The colors and textures, as well as growth habits and tendencies of the plants are the palette with which I can construct the bones of a design to grow and change for years to come. I propagate many of the plants I use which gives me the time to get to know them individually, and imagine the container and companions that would be best with them.

The terrariums on exhibit range in age from 2 months to 4 years. They are similar to bonsai, with the plants kept in check with careful trimming. Some of the plants are miniature or very slow growing, needing no trimming. Others can be aggressive, resulting in a design that will be much more fluid over the years as the plants compete for resources and are shaped by my hand. You can see more about this on my website, or give me a call.

I open my studio to teach people about the art and science of building and maintaining terrariums, kokedama, and bonsai. In addition, I consult with people who want to learn about house plants and gardening in their own homes or offices, usually in half day sessions, and enjoy sharing my love for our green companions with people who have never considered or understood how to appreciate their beauty and life force. My students learn basic considerations for selecting plants for a particular space, and technical skills on handling, transplanting, watering, etc. which, once learned, open up the world of plants for most people to explore and enjoy.

Come See Me at Dabney’s Fall Festival Saturday Oct. 21!!

The fine folks at Dabney’s Nursery invited me to bring some terrariums for sale this Saturday and I said, HECK YEAH!!!  There’ll be mule drawn carriage tours of the nursery, BBQ, a petting zoo, and live music by Delta Joe Sanders.  Who could ask for more on a beautiful October afternoon?

So, in between all of that fun stuff, step inside the gift shop to see my new creations.  I have a variety of smaller terrariums, some that can hang in a kitchen window, and will bring a few larger guys, too.  Also, a good variety of healthy, happy tillandsias (air plants), a few terrarium kits, and a “build your own” for kids while supplies last!

Dabney’s is located at 5576 Hacks Cross Road; I’ll be there from 11 am to 4 pm, so come on down and visit a while.  Got a question?  Give me a holla at 901-828-3685.

This beauty is now 6 months old and needs a good trimming – come see it. You might have a table just waiting for it at home!

You can put them away from a window so long as you have a broad spectrum light. Plants need light to make food, remember?

HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE DECEMBER 18 – YA’LL COME!

It’s that time again, what with the cold and gray of winter descending on us, to get a little green to brighten your home or office.  Terrariums are great gifts for anyone who likes nature (and, really, who doesn’t like nature?) and particularly for us urban dwellers, with no space or time to garden.

Come see me Sunday December 18, from noon to four pm, and I’ll help you pick just the right creation, whether simple and low maintenance for the novice, or more elaborate for a plant enthusiast to trim and train.

Seeking something truly unique?  Think kokedama!

And that’s not all!  Alisa Botto will be here with some photos from her Suburban Skies series, and they’re fabulous!

I’ll be cooking some nibbles, too, and hope you can come share some holiday cheer.  Check it all out below, send me a message, or call me at 901-828-3685 for more information.  Ya’ll Come!

Scenery Changes With the Seasons

This helianthus augustifolia is a shrubby weedy thing all year, but I know when everything else is waning, I’ll walk out one dreary morning and find a fountain of golden cheer.  The bees and butterflies cover it up, then when the seeds come the small birds feast!

October in Memphis is bittersweet, the annuals are over, the light is less intense and days are shorter, but the cool days are a welcome relief.  Time to pull out all the old raggedy zinnias and plant pansies, dianthus, wallflowers if you see them, chard, etc., and install some perennials before the ground gets too cold,

It is important to plan your gardens with an eye toward succession blooming so you can always have bright spots even in dreary winter days,

And speaking of planning, now is a good time to contact me to order a custom designed terrarium to brighten your home or office this winter.  Layaway for holiday gifts available.  My terries are one of a kind, not mass produced, can be tailored to suit any space and tastes, and will live for years with minimal care.  Call me at 901-828-3685 or send me a message
