What To Do On A Rainy Holiday Weekend ?

I’ve been putting all my houseplants outside to get some great rain action.  It started with the tillandsias (air plants), then everybody else started clamoring for a turn, so I’be been toting my friends out in the driveway all morning.  Rain washes the plant, and gives it all kinds of nutrients, plus the physical stimulation of the rain is invigorating.  Kind of like a spa day… Speaking of which, I had a great spa day at the Midtown Spa last week, over on Peabody between Bhan Thai and the Annesdale Park Gallery.  All of which are great places to visit on a rainy day weekend.  Hooray!

A New Green Mansion for the Barnharts

I recently had the pleasure of building a huge terrarium for Nancy and Dick Barnhart.  They had installed a 150 gallon aquarium between their living and dining rooms, and after many years decided they wanted a change.

The aquarium was a focal point of the Barnhart’s home
I had to build up the substrate and soil by more than a foot before planting.
Dick was delighted to see the design begin to take place. I made a gentle sloping mound of soil, with a stream bed to add interest, then began painting the landscape with mosses, ferns, tillandsias, and many more exotic rainforest plants.
Prayer plant; cryptanthus; tillandsias; streptocarpus; Virginia blue rabbits foot fern; pink fittonia. This is just one section, but you get the idea. Things will grow and change over time, depending on how Nancy decides to train the plants – she may keep it manicured or may let the plants grow freely into a wildly exuberant jungle.

If you are interested in having your own rainforest under glass, give me a call at 901-828-3685 or send me a message below. Thanks for checking it out!

Come See Me Saturday April 4 at Annesdale Park Gallery

I’ll be planting some big pots for the front terrace at David Hasty’s gallery on Saturday, and fiddling with the terrariums he has scattered around the gallery. I feel privileged to have my little friends in such a gorgeous space.  I have an especially elegant terry with a chocolate soldier espicia blooming right now, it’s something to see, as well as moss bowls and more looking for good homes. Espicias are especially suited to terrariums; they are related to African violets, but have incredible patterned leaves and grow by sending out aerial plantlets like a spider plant – you can see one of the plantlets in the top of this photo with its roots dangling in search of soil to settle into.  Come anytime on Saturday between 10 and 5 to see what’s up!  The gallery is at 1290 Peabody Avenue, just west of Cleveland.  For more info you can call me at 901-828-3685, or check it out at http://theannesdaleparkgallery.com
