Sept 24 and 25 – Build Your Own Terrarium With An Expert, Enjoy It For Years

The base price of $50 includes the gravel, activated carbon, sphagnum moss, and my special soil mix designed for use in terrariums, plus detailed instructions and information from the Memphis Plant Lady herself, who will always be available to answer any questions you may have as your little green friend grows and changes.  I have some very nice plastic bowls, about 8 inches in diameter, that can be included in the base fee, but glass is much more elegant.

Workshops will be conducted in my studio at 700 North Belvedere in Midtown Memphis on

Saturday September 24, 2016, at 2:00 p.m.

Sunday September 25, 2016,

at 12:30 p.m. or 4:00 p.m.

Here’s how it works:

I collect and propagate miniature exotic tropical plants suitable for low light and high humidity conditions, for use in my living art creations, and my mini-greenhouses are popping their tops with an abundance of extras, so I’m having a build your own workshop to share the largesse. If you want to learn the art and science of designing, building, and maintaining these miniature rainforests from an expert, don’t miss this opportunity.

I’ll show you how to customize the terrarium to suit your space and taste by your choice of glassware, plants, and accessories.

Plants cost $5 to $15 each (most are $5 but for the true collector I have a few rare gems I can share).

I suggest you buy your own glass in advance for better price and selection.   I’ll have a limited variety of sizes and shapes of glassware on hand, from $10 to $60 or so dollars.  Make sure the glass is clear, no ripples or waves, and that you can get your hand easily through the opening; it should be at least 10 inches deep; it must be watertight; remember it will be much heavier going home, so not too big.

Accessories are things like geodes and crystals, petrified wood, fairies or dinosaurs. Again, bring your own to make it just how you want it, or buy some from my huge stash of little interesting things. No metal or plaster items are suitable.

You can make more than one; an additional charge for the planting substrates may apply. Send me a message at the link below or call me at 901-828-3685. Hope to see you there!  Nancy Morrow

Rare Terrarium Plants, Air Plants, and More at Repticon Memphis July 30-31 – Ya’ll Come!

I’m meeting my good friend, the Air Plant King from The Funny Farm himself, Michael Seal, down in Southaven next week at the Repticon Memphis convention.

What’s Repticon, you ask?  Well, in September of 2009 Repticon expanded West with Repticon Memphis, a major reptile expo. Hosted at The Landers Center (formerly known as the Desoto Civic Center) in Southaven, Mississippi,  guests from Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi have a chance to encounter a wide variety of reptiles and amphibians that they might not have had the opportunity to experience in their home cities. (Guests from outside of Mississippi purchasing pets to take home should check first to make sure their new pets are welcome by their local laws.) Repticon Memphis was also the second Repticon show to feature a venomous-included area, featuring non-native venomous snakes from around the world. Lots of herpers come out to the show from all over the tri-state, and we are very excited to be joining the lineup of vendors.

You can find all the details here: Repticon Memphis

Michael is bringing a passel of tillandsias and other bromeliads, driftwood, and whatnot.  Check out his website,

I’m bringing terrarium plants, terrariums, kokedama, crystals and minerals, terrarium soil mix and kits, and who knows what all!

Check out the photos below, and give me a call at 901-828-3685 with any questions.  Please leave your info for occasional plant posts.

Come see us, it should be very interesting…

Build Your Own Terrarium Sunday June 12

I collect and propagate miniature exotic tropical plants suitable for low light and high humidity conditions, for use in my living art creations, and my mini-greenhouses are popping their tops with an abundance of extras, so I’m having a build your own workshop to share the largesse.  If you want to learn the art and science of designing, building, and maintaining these miniature rainforests from an expert, don’t miss this opportunity.

Sign up today, space is limited to 6 people for each workshop, then come have fun playing in the dirt with us.

The first workshop is from 1 to 3 pm, the second is from 3:30 to 5:30, on Sunday June 12, at 700 North Belvedere in Midtown Memphis.

Here’s how it works:

The base price of $45 includes the gravel, activated carbon, sphagnum moss, and my special soil mix designed for use in terrariums; detailed instructions and information from the Memphis Plant Lady herself, and an ongoing hotline for answers to any questions you may have as your little green friend grows and changes. Then, customize the terrarium to suit your space and taste by your choice of glassware, plants, and accessories.

Plants cost $5 to $15 each (most are $5 but for the true collector I have a few rare gems I can share).

I’ll have a variety of sizes and shapes of glassware on hand, from $10 to $60 or so dollars, or better yet, bring your own glassware with you.

Build Your Own Terry Interesting Tidbits Terrarium Care

WARNING!  This is NOT a terrarium!

Every few months I will see displays of items purporting to be terrariums which are actually only a glass pot, no top and no drainage, jammed with tropical plants that will be dead in weeks unless they are lifted out and put into more suitable living quarters. Usually these are in grocery store floral departments, or in a hardware store by the front door where they get blasted with cold air every time the door opens.  Poor little fellows, my heart aches to see them.

Take a look at this example:

A rubber tree, a parlor fern, and an alocasia.  All beautiful plants, but they get REALLY big, and are so jammed together in this tiny tube that they are battling to the death for the very limited resources available to them.  The sweet little tillandsias ionantha mexicana huddled at the bottom might outlast them, if he doesn’t dry out first.  There is no top, so it will have to be misted and watered frequently, but there is no drainage, so the roots will most likely rot if the upper part of the plant lives long enough.

Another comment mistake is using succulents. At least there is no top on this glass container, but no drainage is a bad thing for succulents.  Many people cover their succulent plantings, only to have the high moisture quickly rot the plant.  Check out this post How Not to Plant a Terrarium for in depth discussion on caring for succulents.

The whole point of a terrarium is to provide a high moisture environment for plants that grow in tropical and temperate rainforests, or along streambeds and waterfalls.

I’ve spent many years growing tropical plants, and have been building terrariums for quite a while now.  I have several that are around three years old, and still happy and green.  Or pink or purple or red, I like colorful leaves … So if you want a Green Mansion terrarium, talk to the Plant Lady!
